In February 2021 the Baylor University Board of Regents accepted a comprehensive report from the Commission on Historic Campus Representations. The group recommended in part that the University establish physical representations – like memorials – to commemorate the contributions of Black individuals to the University. In May 2022 the Board approved a four-phase framework to address strategic priorities identified by the Commission.
Phase 1 is complete, with renowned architecture design firm Sasaki having been selected for the new Campus Experience Project.
Phase 2 formally began with the February 20, 2024, ceremonial groundbreaking for the Memorial to Enslaved Persons, which was preceded by the relocation of the Centennial Time Capsule on Founders Mall. This phase also includes additional historical context being placed around the existing Judge Baylor statue, which connects his history of enslavement with those individuals recognized by the Memorial.
Phase 3 will include enhancements to Speight Avenue that explain how the land upon which Baylor sits evolved and was developed, often at the expense of communities and individuals already occupying the property.
Phase 4 will feature improvements along the Quadrangle.
